1001 Albums #49

The Sonics!!!Here Are The Sonics!!! is the original grunge and punk band album of the 60s. I have never heard of them, but many punk bands and grunge bands named them as an influence. Kurt Cobain was influenced by them. Both bands are from the Washington state. The difference is one band hit it big around the world and the other never made it much past the Northwest.

The Sonics have all the angst of a garbage band of the 70s and 80s. I listened to them a few times and I wondered why they never made it into the big time. I think every so often someone comes along ahead of “their time” and create something unique, but it is ignored by the masses. Later, someone else comes along and expands maybe a little on it, then they get the recognition. This is probably what happened with The Sonics.

It might be the abrasive sound of the singer’s vocals which turned people off. Listen to “The Witch” and remember this is the 60s. This song would have had a hard time finding a radio station to play it. “The Witch” is unlike anything I have listened to at this point of the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Have Love Will Travel” and “Psycho” are worth the listen in my opinion. The latter is definitely one of the harder songs on the album. I think the albums deserves some respect for being a bit of a trailblazer for punk music. If they had written more songs on this album I might have found it more enjoyable, but remakes get tiresome. The album is good, but uneven. 7/10.

  1. I just listened to this album and loved it! Especially Have Love Will Travel and The Witch. Definitely ahead of their time. So much angst!

    1. Awesome. I did think of you the first time I heard it. I thought it was great.
