The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is one of Pink Floyd’s album that I have never heard. I was a huge fan of them in my teen years. Even my mother listened to them when I was a child. I am really curious how this will sound compared to the albums that I know from Pink Floyd.
This first album from Pink Floyd has the original members: Syd Barrett, Richard Wright, Roger Waters and Nick Mason who is the only member to be on all their albums.
From the first song “Astronomy Domine” you can hear Pink Floyd was on their was to greatness. I would not call this a real concept album like their later albums, but the pieces are almost in place.
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is an album that should be played as one piece to make it more enjoyable. The songs are all over the place. On some of the songs I think I like this song sort of, then it changes into weirdness and I love it.
The music cannot be contained or put into one genre. It is all over the place. Experimental rock or psychedelic rock does not completely describe it. It is Pink Floyd. “Interstellar Overdrive” is one of the greatest songs. I want to hear it on real speakers. I wish I had a real stereo. I hate my poor life. I always had the things I wanted in a previous version of myself.
I wonder if Syd Barrett thought these things. He had a mental breakdown soon after this period. The band had to release him. I had a granduncle who was a nutter. He was my grandmother’s brother. He was a genius, but he went mad when his wife left him. He got better, but perpetual rhythms got the best of him. He never returned.
The album is great, but not later Pink Floyd great. I would listen again and again. I thing there are some songs that need to be on my playlist. Give it a listen on Spotify. 8.5/10.
