The Kinks are back again so soon! The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was a huge flop when it was released. I have noticed that albums ahead of their time flop often during their initial release, but are reevaluated later for their genius. I wonder if this is one of those albums. I sure do hope so, since I have listened to a few crappy ones lately.
“The Village Green Preservation Society” single is listed as folk music, but this song is rocking. Perhaps they meant it is folk lyrically
“We are the Office Block Persecution Affinity
God save little shops, china cups, and virginity
We are the Skyscraper Condemnation Affiliates
God save Tudor houses, antique tables, and billiards”.
Ray Davies the frontman stated that it is about the things you treasure and “Virginity is sacred. You only have it once. That innocence—and it’s a thing to treasure. I still search for things that I do for the first time.”
There are only a few songs “Animal Farm” and “People Take Pictures of Each Other” that I would have left off the album, but “Monica” is the worst of the lot. I hate the calypso style and the lyrics are goofy. I bet you thought I would leave off “Phenomenal Cat” because there isn’t such a thing. I actually like the song even though I hate cats.
I think you should just listen to the album. This is by far the best Kinks album yet. I was tired when I listened to it, but I could not stop until it was over. Bassist Pete Quaife will leave the band shortly and it will never be this great. 9/10.
