#120 Big Brother and the Holding Company – Cheap Thrills

Big Brother and the Holding Company second album is considered one of the greatest albums of psychedelic music. It was their last album with Janis Joplin as their lead singer.

The album’s cover is interesting because it was done by underground comic artist Robert Crumb. I studied about him in a class at Colorado State University. I cannot remember if it was the documentary class or the film class.

I am not a fan of Joplin’s voice. It sounds like she swallowed a frog in the song “Summertime” or maybe someone is choking her while she tries to scream the lyrics. Or maybe she had the influenza and she tried to sing it. Or she is dying. I could go on all day, but I think you get the point. It is a horrible cover.

Her voice sounds better on her iconic cover hit song “Piece of My Heart“. She screams at her lover as if she wants him to break her heart again and she does not give a crap.

Overall it is not a terrible album. I am not a huge fan of her voice. I prefer the Bette Midler version of her in the film The Rose. Without Joplin the band would never have another hit. 6/10.
