#177 Miles Davis – Bitches Brew

Miles Davis is back with Bitches Brew. Some of these artist are overly represented. This is Davis’ fourth album on the list. They have progressively gotten better, but I want to hear other artist. I think this book of 1001 Albums… should move people to check out new music and honour great artists over the years.

I feel as though I am becoming more knowledgeable about jazz. I grew up with it surrounding me, but I never purposely listened to it. Davis is one of those artist that demands you actively listen. He knows how to make the sounds of chaos reach the listener’s ears, brain and heart.

According to the book that I am getting this ranking from Davis wanted to recreate what he heard from Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland. I am not sure if he accomplished that exactly. I think he must have deconstructed jazz, then rebuilt it into Miles Davis Jazz.

Bitches Brew” is definitely my favorite of the six songs. The only problem is that it is almost 27 minutes long. I look at it as several songs with common themes or threads twisting and turning until we reach the end. Davis is working his trumpet out like he is in the Olympics for musicians.

This album has been reviewed by everyone from critics to musicians to every day people. I cannot really add much to what has been written, except to say it is an excellent album. I would give it a listen or two before saying you hate jazz. 9/10.
