#182 Carpenters – Close to You

The Carpenters is one of those 70s acts that most people were embarrassed to admit that they liked at the time, but years later it became cool to say you did. I grew up hearing them so I did not care what others thought. I listened to a range of music and could appreciate them as serious artist. I thought there was something haunting in their sound. There was something oddly strange about a brother and sister singing together. I thought is was special. I could not imagine doing anything like it with my family. Close to You is the second album from Richard and Karen Carpenter. Richard was the pianist and Karen was the voice and drummer.

We’ve Only Just Begun” is one of their most popular songs. It is one song that makes me sad the moment I hear the first piano note. The song is about a young couple on the road of life together in the beginning stages of marriage. It is probably my favourite song.

(They Long to Be) Close to You” is one of the most beautiful songs. Once again it is the piano intro that makes this song so melancholy sounding. To me this song’s lyrics represent unrequited love. There is a sense that there is this perfect person in your life and everyone sees how great he or she is and they long to be with that person, but none of them are able to for some reason,

“Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
On the day that you were born the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue”.

Karen’s voice conveys the ache that we all feel when in this situation. She knew how to use her sadness to make great art. She had many struggles in life. She was a very sad person.

I think if I had heard these songs long ago I might have liked them better. I like the Carpenters, but I am not sure this is their best album. Maybe they are better as a singles band. I looked to see what others thought and it was all over the place. Many people seemed to like Horizon; it was more experimental at that time for them. This album has a lot of fans too. 8/10.
