Janis Joplin has been on the list previously with Big Brother and the Holding Company. This was her second album and it came out three months after her death. She is a member of the so-called 27 Club.
At first listen I did not like the first song “Move Over” and a few others, but on the second listen it changed. I think this album and Joplin’s voice is an acquired taste or one that grows on its listener.
I think my least favourite songs are “Half Moon” and “Mercedes Benz” the last song she ever recorded.
The songs Joplin shines on are ones like “My Baby” where she cries out passionately for her lover or “Me And Bobby McGee” where she tells a story. My favourite song is Bobby Womack’s “Trust Me“. She is especially passionate and tender.
This is a great album to end a career on. It is a shame that she died so young. She may have had a long career with more music to share. I actually like her solo album. I will have to check out the first one. Check it out on Spotify. 10/10.
