Big Star is a band that I have never heard of at all. Their album #1 Record is their debut album of power pop music. Hopefully, it will be enjoyable. It is hard to write about a band that I have never even heard of.
“The Ballad of El Goodo” is a soothing sounding song. I think Alex Chilton might have the better voice of the two lead singers.
Chris Bell takes the lead in “In the Street” which is used as the theme song for the sitcom That ’70s Show. A cover version with Cheap Trick is used. Sadly, Bell was killed in a car accident at the age of 27.
Chilton is definitely the singer I prefer in this band. In the song “Thirteen” he gives a sweet vocal performance.
“Try Again” and “ST 100/6” makes me feel so sad.
“Love me again
Be my friend
I need you now
I’ll show you somehow”
“Watch The Sunrise” gives a more upbeat vibe that is need between the two songs above. Chilton’s vocals are a breathe of fresh air.
This is a really great album. I am surprised I have never heard of it. The two singer-songwriters were better than McCartney-Lennon, at least the Lennon part of it. It is sad how some bands get overlooked by the public. It is even sadder when it is the record companies fault. This band and album are so underrated, but I guess they were recognized eventually by their peers and they were inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2014. 10/10.
