The B-52’s were the strangest band for me. There was nothing like them at the time. They sounded like the 50s and 60s pop kitsch and late 70s and 80s new wave was tossed into a salad bowl, mixed and served at a weird drug-induced house party. Their self-titled album was released in 1979 and is considered one of the greatest.
The first side of the album is great, but it definitely falls apart on Side two. The worst song is “Lava”, which is supposed to be a bit erotic, but it sounds goofy. A party band doing sexy is a recipe for disaster. I would skip “There’s a Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon)“. The title should be enough of an explanation.
My favourite songs are all on Side one. I especially like “Rock Lobster” and “Planet Claire“. They are fun to dance to.
I think this should have been an EP or they should have written a few more songs. I think they killed the first side, but faltered in the end. It is still a great party album. 8/10.
