#433 The Police – Reggatta De Blanc

The Police were a short-lived, but highly influential band. They were together from 1977 to 1984. Reggatta De Blanc was their second album. I was a huge Police fan, but I was never fortunate enough to see them on tour. I did see Sting a couple times. I prefer the band over the solo artist. He seems too full of himself and they made better music together. Trivia: The title is faux French.

Songs you must listen to: “Message in a Bottle“, “Reggatta de Blanc”, “It’s Alright for You”, “Walking on the Moon“, and “The Bed’s Too Big Without You“.

Sting is a great lyricist. He knows how to dig deep and write about the human condition. The reason “Message in a Bottle” is so great is because it connects to the feelings of loneliness many of us feel. It is a common theme in their songs. I believe it is the reason I have always related to the band’s music.

The funniest lyrics are found in the song “On Any Other Day“. I think it shows we all have bad days.

My wife has burned the scrambled eggs
The dog just bit my leg
My teenage daughter ran away
My fine young son has turned out gay.

I am trying to be fair in this review, but I grew up listening to The Police. I do favour their 80s music more because I know those albums better. I noticed they have one more album on the list of 1001 Albums, which I think is crazy. Rolling Stone ranked all, but one of their albums on their Top 500. 9.5/10.
