The Pretenders exploded on the scene with their album Pretenders. It is considered one of the best debut albums of all-time. This original line-up would not last long because drug abuse would take two members; guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon.
I remember when they released “Brass in Pocket“. I remember it because of the lyric “I’m special, so special.” People tried to make me feel better about the horrible childhood I was having and they would tell me people with so many pains are special. It was a load of crap, but unfortunately I believed it for a long time.
All of the songs are great, but “Kid” is extra special to me. I used to pretend she was singing it to me. I grew up in an angry place and sad place.
Kid gracious kid
Your eyes are blue but you won’t cry
I know angry tears are too dear
You won’t let them go
As for this album, it is perfection. Chrissie Hynde is one of the original tough women of rock. She puts herself into each song. All the band members are talented. James Honeyman-Scott was a great guitarist. This is a masterpiece from 1980. 10/10.
