I do not know any of Bobby Womack‘s music. The only reason I know of his name is because it is in a Mariah Carey song. The Poet is his thirteenth album. I read a bit about his life and it definitely sucked. He married Sam Cooke’s widow three months after he died and was ostracized by everyone, even his fans. He was also addicted to cocaine and lost two of his children; one committed suicide at the age of 21.
The only song that I kind of liked was “If You Think You’re Lonely Now“. Maybe if I listened to a couple others a bit more I would feel differently, but only mildly.
His voice sounds like someone who had been around the block for a few years. Unfortunately, the music sound really dated to me. It does not sound fresh even for 1981. I think Marvin Gaye’s sound was better at this time period. If this album was recorded in the late 60s or early 70s, then I would understand its being in the list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. 5/10.
