Tom Tom Club‘s husband-and-wife team Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz were part of the more popular band Talking Heads. They branched out to become a hit band of the early 80s. Their hits were mostly on the dance charts. I have never heard their self-titled debut album. Frantz and Weymouth have been married since 1977 and have two sons. That is a miracle in the music world, even Captain and Tennille’s love couldn’t keep them together.
I have never heard the first dance hit “Wordy Rappinghood“, but it is interesting. They like to make weird sounds in their songs.
The biggest hit was the infectious “Genius of Love“. It is one of the most sampled rhythm tracks of the 80s, especially made more known from Mariah Carey’s hit “Fantasy”. I also like “L’éléphant“, “As Above, So Below“, and “On, On, On, On…”.
Overall this is a surprisingly great album. It is extremely danceable. Your body will move unless you are dead. I am shocked that they were not more popular. I think it might have to do with the abstractness of their art. It was too much for the general public. 9.6/10.
