#516 Malcolm McLaren – Duck Rock

Malcolm McLaren is someone I have heard of from the 80s. I cannot name a song, but I am sure it will be on Duck Rock. I remember who, vaguely, played one of his songs for me. It was someone that I met in my neighbourhood. Definitely not someone important to my life. McLaren was also the promoter and manager of bands the New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols.

I know two of the songs, but only vaguely. “Buffalo Gals” and “Double Dutch” were both hits for McLaren. The former has been covered and sampled by other artist including Eminem’s 2002 single “Without Me”, with the lyric being changed to “Two trailer park girls go ’round the outside”. I prefer the later song.

I would also try out “Obatala (La Republica Dominicana)“, “Legba“, and “(Living on the Road In) Soweto”.

I figured out which song I knew from the guy I mentioned above. It was “Madame Butterfly” from the album Fans.

Maybe a lot of people will not like or know this album, but the influence on music, even today cannot be denied. McLaren was a musical genius who was ahead of his time. I think this album is a lot of fun and would be great for a house party. 8.5/10.
