#531 Culture Club – Colour By Numbers

Culture Club‘s Colour By Numbers made the list; I was surprised it was not their debut album Kissing to Be Clever, but after looking at the song list to it, I remembered it was not a masterpiece. This was the pinnacle of their short-lived fame. Sure their follow-up has “The War Song”, but it was a mess. Lead singer Boy George was a mess too. He started another band Jesus Loves You, but they had one great album, which was a failure. I have heard his voice lately, but it sounds like someone who did way too many drugs and ruined it. I have a funny story to share. I was in drama class and we had to imitate someone so I dressed up as Boy George. It was the only way I could do it. I even rode a bus through the city. Nobody said a word to me. It was the last time I ever wore a costume.

Karma Chameleon” was a great song because I could relate to the lyrics. I was and probably still am a chameleon. I think it has been harder being one since social media has closed the world into a smaller space. Yet, I am unchanged by it.

I have to say that this album is a lot better than I remembered it being. I probably never listened to the whole thing. I think I only disliked one song “Changing Every Day“. It felt bland compared to everything around it. Too 70s maybe.

Boy George had a beautiful voice. It is a shame that he misused it and he let drugs take him down. They should have had a bigger career. I know they released an album in 2018, but his voice is not the same. This was their best work. 9/10.
