I travelled to New York for a week and the holidays kept me busy so I had to pause my listening of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die until now. And no, I was not listening to Christmas music.
Morrissey. One of those artist who only needs one name. I was a huge fan of his in the 80s and 90s. Morrissey was the most mysterious singer ever. He stated many times that he hated sex, but was attracted to males and females. His music sounds as miserable as many people think of his ideology. I think that is what drew many to embrace his persona. Your Arsenal was Morrissey’s third solo release. It was considered his best since The Smiths disbanded.
I forgot that Morrissey likes long titles for songs like the first song “You’re Gonna Need Someone on Your Side“. It sounds like a throwback to the days of rockabilly, but better. Other songs i really like are “We’ll Let You Know“, “Seasick, Yet Still Docked“, “Glamorous Glue”, and “I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday“.
The whole album is great. If you like Morrissey, then you will love this album. It is upbeat and depressing. The lyrics tend to be depressing even when the music would suggest otherwise. 9.5/10.
