The Smashing Pumpkins is one of the bands I have been a fan of since the beginning, but eventually I stopped noticing them. I am not sure why. I had all their albums from Gish to Adore. I cannot remember if I saw them in concert or not. It was a fuzzy time for me when Siamese Dream was released. There are pieces of me still missing in some fog that I lived in during 1993.
One of the biggest hits for the album was “Today“. It is a song about depression and considering suicide. Frontman Billy Corgan, the genius behind the album, was depressed to the point of contemplating suicide. I related to this song instantly. I have always been suicidal and around this time I had one of my attempts. I was not successful…obviously.
Other songs that I really like are “Mayonaise“, “Spaceboy“, “Cherub Rock“, “Quiet“, and all the rest of the album.
Another favourite song and my anthem at the time of release was “Disarm“. How could it not be with lyrics so relatable?
I used to be a little boy
So old in my shoes
And what I choose is my choice
What’s a boy supposed to do?
The killer in me is the killer in you
My love
I send this smile over to you
This whole album is a masterpiece. It was one of my favourite albums of the 90s. I love the quiet moments, the rage minutes, and all that is in-between. If you have not listened to it and you like grunge, alternative rock and a poetic lyrics, then go to Spotify now. 10/10.
