I have never heard of R&B artist D’Angelo. I think I had moved away from R&B during this time period. Maybe there wasn’t any on the radio during 1995 when D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar came out. This album was part of the neo soul movement that spread across the USA and United Kingdom in the 90s.
I dislike songs that are vulgar for no reason, except to be vulgar. “Sh★t, Damn, Motherf★cker” is an example of it. It seems as though that was all the lyrics he could write.
If he had made a better version of Smokey Robinson‘s “Cruisin‘”, then I might have appreciated the album more. Unfortunately, he could not rise to that standard of excellence. If you are going to remake a classic like this, then you need to bring you best.
Overall, I get too many early Prince vibes. Why was this so popular? Perhaps Prince was being weird at the time of its release and he was going by (the Love Symbol) or as I called him Squiggly Line Man. I was not impressed at all. 3/10.
Agreed. I tried so hard to get into D’Angelo but never could
