#863 Billy Bragg & Wilco – Mermaid Avenue

Billy Bragg & Wilco‘s album Mermaid Avenue is what happens when a British artist and American band combine their talents to produce an album of unheard lyrics written by American folk singer Woody Guthrie. They took it even further by doing the music in a contemporary folk style.

As you can imagine, I didn’t really like the album. The music bordered on country too much for. I did find one song that got my attention. As I heard “Birds and Ships” I recognised the female vocals almost instantly. Natalie Merchant was one of favourite singers in the late 80s and 90s.

I wish they had ask Merchant to sing all the songs. I would have loved it. I could not feel this album. Well, that is not completely true. I felt irritated listening to it. 4/10.

  1. The songs on this album are always on my favorite rotation, especially on a road trip!
