Gorillaz self-titled debut album was released in 2001. They were an instant hit. Guinness World Records list them as the world’s “Most Successful Virtual Band”. In reality, they have only one constant musician member; Damon Albarn of Blur. I think I did not hear much of this album in Europe when it was released. I discovered the Gorillaz later and it was a disappointment for me because I assumed it was the end of Blur.
I absolutely liked this album. I know a part of it is the visual side, but I am judging it by the music at the moment. Albarn is magnificent as usual. It is definitely best played on headphones. The first songs grabbed me by the imagination and dragged me into their world. I did not want to leave. The visual side is done by comic book creator Jamie Hewlett. He co-created Tank Girl.
The idea for the band came about while Albarn and Hewlett were watching MTV. But I am not interested in the visual today. I will circle back around to it at a later date. I want to finish listening to all 1001 Albums…. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes every genre of music thrown into one album. 10/10.
