Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds thirteenth studio album Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus was released in 2004. This is Cave’s third time on the list as a solo artist. He appeared once in the band The Birthday Party. I did not like the band nor his earlier album, but I like his music as he aged. I have never heard this album.
Songs that I liked best were “Cannibal’s Hymn”, “Messiah Ward”, “Abattoir Blues”, “Nature Boy”, and almost all of disc two, which is mellower.
Overall, I think this is a really good album if you like Cave’s uniquely emotional baritone voice. The music is easy to like, especially on bluesy songs like “Babe, You Turn Me On”. I recommend listening to The Boatman’s Call or Murder Ballads before trying this album. My only problem is that it is a double album. It might be a bit too much Cave for some people. 8/10.
