Who is Richard Hawley? He is an English singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer. He has worked with a lot of artists, but he is not well known in the States. Coles Corner is Hawley’s fourth studio album. Another question to answer is “What is Coles Corner?” It is a popular meeting place of old and new lovers, especially for people over 30 years old.
I found it hard to separate the songs from the whole. It is not like an album with a few pop hits and a lot of filler. For some of us, this whole album would sound like filler, but for others the whole album is fantastic. I really liked “The Ocean“. It sounds quite sad as it progresses. It sounds like it was written for me. I also really liked “Born Under a Bad Sign” “I Sleep Alone”, “Tonight”.
This is an interesting album. I am sure it should not be on the list. It sounds old and yet new at the same time. I doubt this would make it onto an American list of 1001 Albums… Hawley has definitely listened to old albums of his parents to find his niche in music. I kind of liked it for its chamber pop sound. It was extremely relaxing. I would recommend this album to anyone who is a little adventurous in their musical taste and want to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon with a glass of red wine under a tree while reading a book. 9/10.
