#1043 The National – High Violet

The National‘s fifth album High Violet was released in 2010 to critical acclaim. I remember listening to them in Hungary. I have not listened to them in years. It will be interesting to hear them again. It is hard to believe it has been 10 years since its release and 7 years since I left Hungary.

I know I really like the first song “Terrible Love“. It makes me feel sadder. “Sorrow” also makes me feel that way. The lyrics sound like someone was reading my journal.

“Sorrow found me when I was young,
Sorrow waited, sorrow won.
Sorrow that put me on the pills,
It’s in my honey, it’s in my milk.

Don’t leave my hyper heart alone
On the water,
Cover me in rag and bones, and sympathy.
‘Cause I don’t wanna get over you.
I don’t wanna get over you.”

I also like “Bloodbuzz Ohio“, “Runaway”, “Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks”, and all the other songs.

Overall, this is a beautiful made album. The music is incredibly well produced and hypnotic. Co-writers Matt Berninger and Aaron Dessner have done a beautiful job of collaboration. I should have listened to this album a lot more than I have over the years. It is incredible. If you like post-punk revival and indie rock, then this is your album. 10/10.
