When I saw that Elvis Presley’s first album was the second one on the list I felt relieved. I know who he is because my grandfather watched his films all the time while he was getting his drinking done. I know a lot of Presley’s songs and he is the “King of Rock and Roll.” I kind of fooled myself into thinking it was going to be much better than Sinatra’s album. I was wrong.
As I listen to the album, while I prepare my dinner of homemade pizza I realise how inconsistent it sounds. It feels all over the place like the thoughts in my head and I am not sure if changing the order of the songs would help. It begins with a remake of Blue Suede Shoes, which is considered one of the first rockabilly songs. I think the song is goofy and I realise memory lane is filled with weeds that have block out reality.
There are a two songs that make it almost worth buying the album. Blue Moon is probably my favourite because it sounds mysterious. I like that he sounds as if he is locked in a chamber and he is remembering a special blue moon from long ago. I have been locked in a chamber so I can relate to what is he longing for in that special moon. The other song I like is I’ll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin’) it is somber sounding in music and lyrics, but it changes to a bit of a chaotic sound at the end. That is how I feel most days. Songs to skip: Tutti Frutti and Blue Suede Shoes.
The great thing about the album is that the songs are all under three minutes. If you hate a song it will be over quickly, although when I hear country music it can seem like an eternity times two before the song ends. Like I mentioned above, I would not buy this album, but Blue Moon is something I could listen to over and over. When Elvis is not singing the overexcited pop tunes his voice is quite pleasurable. Elvis had it all looks, voice and a presence. You cannot deny that he is the X factor that all those singing competitions are looking for.
Fortunately, I found a couple great songs to add to my collection, but unfortunately the pizza I was preparing turned out like this album kind of gooey on the inside so I ate cereal for dinner and it was not the good sugary kind. 6.5/10.
